Location, location, location; perfect for exploring Georgetown. All of the best things to see and do are within walking distance of this hotel. Clean, comfortable room, great shower with complimentary breakfast which set us up nicely for a day of exploration. Hotel staff were friendly and informative. Would to anyone travelling to Georgetown, an affordable and great stay!
Stayed for 3 nights on the second storey. It’s stairs only but don’t worry as the front desk stuff is super friendly and helpful. The aircon in our 3-person bedroom cannot to be controlled so it was too cold for my family. Breakfast was very basic and start from 8am. Else, great location and value! It’s close to many eateries (morning and night markets), attractions and shopping malls – Komtar, First Avenue, Prangin Mall, etc.
The hotel staffs were very friendly, assisting us readily with our queries (including our late night’s request for the luggage weighing machine!)
We enjoyed spacious dining table outside our room, when we bought our supper back to the hotel.
There was also a Kimberley washing laundromat/dryers nearby – in case you need one.
Getting a Grab (the equivalent of Uber in Malaysia) is easy – you only need “patience” as we were situated right at the heart of Georgetown – where the neighbourhood streets were “narrow”. Nam Keng Hotel to Gurney Drive would take just 10mins (no traffic jam).
Oh yes, GrabFood (the equivalent of FoodPanda, Deliveroo) worked very well too!

Stayed here for 3 nights. I booked it as it’s a very unique and bespoke hotel. I got the room on the first floor, so carrying my luggage was not an issue
The room is spacious with lots of old antique stuff. It has a desk and chair and 2 arm chairs with table. Bed is comfortable too. Most importantly the AC is cold and I liked that
Room comes with breakfast. Choices are nasi lemak, roti canai, sausages, eggs, bread, Kung etc. Good option
The only thing I didn’t like is that it doesn’t come with iron and ironing board. But that’s ok as there’s a communal one you can use outside your room. Overall quiet hotel in a very good location with lots of places to eat. Would come back again

This time, I wanted a unique experience, so I chose to stay in a shop house converted into a hotel.
After reading the great reviews, we decided to book at Nam Keng Hotel.
Pros:
1. Nam Keng Hotel is perfectly located right in the heart of Georgetown, which made it super convenient for us to return to our room and rest whenever we needed it.
2. The shop house itself is beautiful, evoking a strong sense of nostalgia. With only eight rooms, it has a charming, family-style atmosphere.
3. The Indian front desk staff was incredibly friendly and informative, and even the lady who I believe was the security was very welcoming.
4. Considering it’s a shop house, the room was surprisingly spacious with a queen-sized bed. The large windows made it bright and airy.
Cons:
1. Since it’s a two-story shop house, we had to use the stairs, but the staff kindly helped us with our luggage.
2. The complimentary breakfast was pretty basic and nothing to get excited about—you can easily skip it.
3. The cupboard had an “old furniture” smell, so we opted not to store our clothes inside.
4. The bed was firm, but the pillows were too soft, which made it difficult to get a good night’s sleep.
5. I’m not a fan of orange lights in the room. [my preference]
