It’s indeed a private property. Entry ticket is RM22 for Malaysian adult. RM5 for car parking at the roadside and compulsory to pay if they know u drive there. If you use taxi or grab, please tell.
Very historic and very thoughtful to display every sense of history element. I find it kinda expensive but when think of the sustainability of it and the efforts they try to preserve and present, RM22 ticket is acceptable.

Located in Bukit Batu Maung, the Penang War Museum is a historical site that was once known as Penang Fort, originally built by the Royal British Engineers in the 1930s. It holds the distinction of being Malaysia’s first World War II museum and possibly one of the first in Asia.

Unlike typical indoor museums, this one is set outdoors, surrounded by dense jungle and overgrown vegetation, adding to its raw and immersive atmosphere. Many of the original structures, including barracks and tunnels, remain intact, allowing visitors to get a glimpse of what life was like during wartime. The museum also features various replicas to enhance storytelling, though some artificial additions may feel unnecessary for those who prefer a purely historical experience.

Interestingly, the site has also gained a reputation as a haunted attraction, with eerie stories of torture and executions by wartime soldiers. It has even been featured on History Channel and National Geographic Channel as a paranormal tourism spot, which may appeal to visitors looking for a more thrilling experience.

From certain vantage points, you can also see the Second Penang Bridge, adding to the scenic backdrop of this historically significant site.

I will not really recommend this war museum.
1.It will need to depend on whether you are a history lover or not.
2. Because the area is far away from the center or airport (need around 16 minutes if there is no traffic jam). No public transport will pass by here.
3. Another thing is that the entree fee is a bit expensive. RM20+, but I feel it is worth it. Because this sport almost fully war 2 building and facility. They also set some of the scene displays to restore us to the scene at that time. Please remember to bring mosquito repellent. Have a Zebra vampire.

Yamashita (a slim) photoshopped picture sitting there 1941, what is this, paint ball in a museum? ghost ghost ghost stories…come on, this is such a shameful place ro visit and totally frustrated to see a potential museum ruined by these…

Waste of time

The very extensive site is largely open to explore, with most of the barracks open, and some of the small escape tunnels under the hill possible to crawl through. Lots of information gives a clear picture of life in the fortifications and of life in Penang under Japanese occupation.
